Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute was established in 1898 and was the first centre for agricultural training in Africa. In the Republic of South Africa, the Institute has secured an eminent track record in agriculture and especially in the field of agricultural training.

Our Vision: The Advancement of Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute as an agricultural and educational centre of excellence to the benefit of the broader community.

Our Mission: To promote sound, integrated managerial and skills training in agriculture with advanced specialisation in area specific fields of excellence informed by industry and societal needs.

At present, training programmes are offered at Higher Education and Training (HET) and Further Education and Training (FET) level. The following qualifications can be obtained:

B.Agric degree (M +3 years)
Higher Certificate in Agriculture (M + 2 years)
Diploma in Agriculture (1 year – 2-year Higher Certificate as prerequisite )
Diploma in Extension (1 year– 2-year Higher Certificate as prerequisite)
Diploma in Cellar Technology (1 year– 2-year Higher Certificate as prerequisite)
Equine Studies (M + 2 years)
Non accredited short courses
Learnerships (Minimum of 10 months)

The above-mentioned training is based on farming enterprises and demands, with the main focus on the Agricultural commodities of the Western Cape.

Further Education and Training (FET)

The learnership offered at Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute is a learning programme registered by AgriSETA and accredited by the South African Qualifications Authority (SAQA). The programme empowers the student with an occupational qualification and the approach includes classroom-based theoretical learning, practical and workplace experience.Elsenburg Agricultural Training Institute also provides short courses for commercial farmers, emerging farmers, land reform beneficiaries and all agricultural interested parties. Short courses are presented on farms, in rural communities, at the FET decentralised training centres based in George, Oudtshoorn, Bredasdorp, Clanwilliam and Elsenburg.

Higher Education Training (HET)

The major subjects for the B.Agric degree are: Pastures, Animal Production (Small stock), Animal Production (Large stock), Vegetable Cultivation, Cellar Management, Pomology, Agricultural Extension, Viticulture, and Oenology. A choice of any two of these subjects must be completed as majors, supplemented by prescribed compulsory subjects.

The Higher Certificate in Agriculture is a two-year course specialising in one of seven programme options: Animal production & Vegetable production/Agronomy; Pomology & Viticulture; Agricultural Extension & Animal production/Agronomy; Vegetables/Viticulture/Pomology.
